Channapatna Wooden Toy Making Craft:
This craft of wooden toy making is many centuries old and is believed to be encouraged by Tipu Sultan in the 18th century. The work involves lacquering the wood and using vegetable dyes for colouring that makes the process eco-friendly and the product safe for use by children. Over the years the design has evolved with addition of various products for home decor, accessories along with the toys. Based in the town of Channapatna, which is around 60 km from Bangalore, this is a traditional craft and is protected as a geographical indication (GI) under the World Trade Organization (WTO). However, lately the craft has seen a decline due to lack of marketing and promotion that has affected the livelihoods of the artisans. Buying this product would go a long way in supporting this intricate craft and the artisans’ livelihoods.
is T-shirt is made of cotton fabric which has a gentle touch on the skin and has a crinkly surface. These T-Shirts are stitched by the workers, primarily women in the small cottage industries. The proceeds from the sale of these T-shirts support their livelihoods.
